A practical public Wi-Fi checklist for verifying networks, disabling sharing, connecting Falemon, handling HTTPS warnings, and cleaning up afterwards.
Public Wi-Fi does not automatically mean that every account will be stolen: modern HTTPS protects much of today’s web traffic. The remaining risks still matter, however, including look-alike hotspots, certificate warnings, device discovery, automatic reconnection, phishing, and an interrupted secure tunnel. Treat safety as a sequence of checks before, during, and after the session.

Verify the network and prepare the device
Ask staff for the exact network name and sign-in procedure. Do not trust a hotspot only because it contains “Free” or “Guest,” or because it has the strongest signal. A look-alike SSID can be created close to the legitimate access point.
Disable automatic joining of open networks. On Windows, use the Public network profile; on every platform, turn off file sharing, nearby sharing, and discovery features you do not need. Install operating-system and browser updates before travelling, not over an unknown network.

Finish captive-portal sign-in before starting Falemon
Airports and hotels commonly use a captive portal. Open a low-risk page, complete the venue’s required sign-in, and confirm that the internet works before starting Falemon. Otherwise the secure connection may block the portal and make Wi-Fi appear connected but unusable.
In Falemon, choose a nearby, responsive node and wait for the client to show a connected state before opening mail, cloud documents, or business systems. Continue to expect HTTPS on websites. Never bypass a certificate warning merely because a VPN is active.

Match the network to the sensitivity of the task
Reading public news and approving a financial transfer do not carry the same risk. A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and its service node, but it cannot repair a phishing site, malicious attachment, weak password, or compromised device.
For banking, privileged administration, medical records, or confidential work, prefer your own mobile hotspot or a managed corporate network. Avoid signing into important services on shared computers, and never attach storage containing sensitive files.

Remove the network and review account activity
When finished, sign out of sensitive services, disconnect Falemon, and leave Wi-Fi. Remove the hotspot from saved networks so the device does not silently reconnect to another access point using the same name.
If you saw a certificate error, unexpected redirect, or account verification alert, switch to a trusted network, change the affected password, inspect recent sign-ins, and close unfamiliar sessions. Record the time, SSID, device, and system version for support without sharing passwords or verification codes.

Can I ignore an HTTPS certificate warning while Falemon is connected?
No. VPN encryption and HTTPS protect different parts of the connection. A certificate warning can indicate a wrong domain, incorrect system time, or interception; stop and change to a trusted network.
Why might Falemon not connect immediately on public Wi-Fi?
The captive portal is often unfinished. Disconnect Falemon, complete the venue sign-in, verify that an ordinary page loads, and then reconnect.
Is a phone hotspot always safe?
A personal cellular hotspot is usually more controllable than an unknown open network, but it still needs a strong password, device monitoring, and awareness of data cost and signal quality.
